Word of the day - Rolling Return

Rolling return is one of the most reliable ways to evaluate a mutual fund because it measures returns across multiple investment periods rather than from just one specific start and end date. Instead of asking, “What return did the fund generate over the last 5 years?”, rolling returns ask, “What return would an investor have earned if they had invested on any day during the last 5 years and stayed invested for a fixed period?” This approach removes the impact of lucky or unlucky investment dates and provides a more realistic picture of a fund's performance.

For example, a 3-year rolling return calculates the return for every possible 3-year period in a fund's history. By analyzing hundreds of such observations, investors can see not only the average return generated but also the consistency of performance across different market conditions. A fund that delivers strong returns in most rolling periods is generally considered more dependable than one that achieves a high return only during a few favorable periods.

For this reason, many professional analysts consider rolling returns a better measure of fund quality than simple CAGR or trailing returns.
